What I’m working on this week

This will be another quick and informal update. These are some of the things that I’m working on right now.

  • I finished two courses in Google Cloud’s Data Scientist / Machine Learning Engineer learning path. These were the Coursera course called Google Cloud Big Data and Machine Learning Fundamentals and the Qwiklabs skill badge called Perform Foundational Data, ML, and AI Tasks in Google Cloud. Both of these courses covered roughly the same cloud services, the latter providing hands-on labs to be able to work though various cloud services, which was pretty cool. The services we covered included BigQuery, DataProc, Dataflow, Dataprep, AI Platform as well as some of Google’s Enterprise API services like the Vision API, Speech-to-Text API, and Video Intelligence API. By far the most interesting service to get to play with was the AI Platform which is used for training and deploying Deep Learning models in the cloud. I’ll definitely be spending more time with this one more in the future.
  • Based on some recommendations I’ve started reading Designing Data Intensive Applications in the evenings. I’m only on the third chapter, but we’ve already covered the fundamental goals of data infrastructure, compared relational, NoSQL, and graph databases, and compared a few querying languages for each database model. It’s an incredibly well-written and comprehensive book, and I can tell I’m going to enjoy it.
  • I’m pursuing my Master’s Degree in Data Science, so I had class and homework this week just like every other week. This week we formed teams for our capstone project. This will be the capstone to the whole degree, so I’m expecting to write more about this project as it progresses.
  • I’m currently budgeting an hour every-other-day for applying to jobs. I’m graduating in December 2021 and currently looking for full-time jobs. I’m trying to avoid spending too much time applying and spending more time on this website and side projects (currently the Google Cloud learning path). Trying to spend more time on things that will pay off in the long-term, and job applications have a short half-life.
